Description
Francisco van der Niepoort came to Portugal from Holland in 1842 to try his hand at the port trade. Five generations later, Niepoort remains a family business with great-great-grandson Dirk Niepoort establishing it as not only one of the most respected Port houses but also internationally renowned wine producers today. Niepoort’s success with dry wine production has lead the way for the Douro (and for Portugal as a whole) to emerge as a top region on the global stage.
We have long been fans of the inimitable Dirk Niepoort and so we are delighted to now be able to share these great wines with our customers.
One of Dirk Niepoorts key missions is to honour biodiversity and so he has been able to recover various wonderful and largely forgotten old white grape varieties in the region of Dao in Portugal.
The Rotulo Branco is a blend of almost extinct varieties:Borrado das Moscas, Rabo de Ovelha, Cercial (no, I hadn’t heard of them either) amongst others. Using no oak, the blend is delicate and well balanced, reflecting the granite soils typical of the region.
