Description
J.J Corry Irish Whiskey was established in 2013 by Louise McGuane it is a revival of an old firm from her hometown of Kilrush in County Clare, Ireland. She has established a reputation for creating exceptional whiskies using traditional Irish methods.”The Hanson” after her grandfather who was a peat cutter and whos legacy she hopes to honour though the nobel craft of distillation.
The whiskey is aged in American oak barrels which are then exposed to the Atlantic Ocean’s salt spray and sea air. This imparts flavour to the whiskey, I suppose not unlike some of the sherry’s aged in Sanluca de Barrameida. This is a deliberate nod towards the traditional 19th century practice of shipping whiskey across the Atlantic Ocean.
This is a complex and layered whiskey with smoke, peat, honey and vanilla with a touch of spice. There is plenty of rich, smooth mouthfeel with fruits and dark chocolate. A slightly smokey after-taste lingers long and finishes warm.
It’s worth noting that Irish whiskey is well known for being distilled three times. This creates a smoother and lighter spirit than Scotch whisky which is typically distilled twice. This gives irish whisky it’s distintive character and sets it apart from other whiskies from across the world.
A fun fact for you: J.J Corey names each batch after a different person so each batch is unique and personal.
