Description
Emile Giffard was a pharmacist in the Loire Valley in France in 1885. He was an inventor and gourmet and wanted to explore the digestive properties of mint and thus developed a pure mint liqueur which was trialled by his local Grand Hotel. It was an immediate success and hailed as the perfect thing to combat the heat of the summer. He closed his pharmacy right away and began to make the “Menthe Pastille” as he called it full-time.
5 generations later and the business is still going stong today. The Menthe-Pastille is still being made alongside fruit liqueurs, herbal liqueurs, guignolets, sauces and syrups.
The business has a stong philosophy – they enjoy working with the farmers that provide their ingredients and encourage biodiversity, organic farming, use renewable energy, and they have taken steps to reduce water consumption and water recycling. Their bottles have become much lighter in weight and 70% of the glass bottles are made using recycled glass.
