Description
Rum started to be produced in Demerara County, Guyana, as early as the 1640s after the land was reclaimed from the Atlantic Ocean by Dutch engineers. The resulting land was high in minerals and perfect for growing sugar cane. By the mid 1700s there were upto 300 distilleries producing rum however, due to the decrease in sugar prices in the early 1900s, there were only 9 distillers left. In 1999 the merger of ae remaining estates and distillerys left only Demerara Distillers Ltdand they continue to produce rum today.
