Description
Spain has a 3,000 year old history of winemaking, with early vineyards planted by the Phoenicians around 1100 BC. While Spains long history with wine is impressive, whats most impressive is the explosion of new wineries and brands in the current Spanish wine market due to the end of Spains military dictatorship in the 1970s.
One such winery is Aguila Alza (meaning soaring eagle in Spanish). Their Monastrell-Merlot blend is made of 80% Monastrell and 20% Merlot. Spanish Monastrell is crafted with Mourvedre grapes (the second most popular grapes in Spain after Tempranillo), which impart complex flavors of deep plum and mild licorice. There are notes of rich blackberries, pepper, fresh herbs, and leather on the nose and palate. The tannins are beautifully soft and the finish is harmonious and satisfying. We recommend pairing with grilled red meats or hard cheeses.
